Stress is the number one killer, worldwide, since it is a major risk factor for diseases like heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, depression, anxiety, psychosomatic diseases, stomach ulcers, joint pains and so on.
Cardiovascular diseases caused 2.3 million deaths in India in the year 1990; this is projected to double by the year 2020. At an underestimate, there are 31.5 million hypertensive in rural and 34 million in urban populations. Around 40 % population is with hypertension. Above 50% of these are unaware, undiagnosed, untreated. There is a strong correlation between changing lifestyle factors and increase in hypertension in India.
India leads the world with largest number of diabetic subjects earning the dubious distinction of being termed the “diabetes capital of the world”. According to the Diabetes Atlas 2006 published by the International Diabetes Federation, the number of people with diabetes in India currently around 40.9 million is expected to rise to 69.9 million by 2025 unless urgent preventive steps are taken.
Cases of high cholesterol and high triglycerides are ever increasing due to lack of proper knowledge about food and calories. There are 50% cases of depression in adult population. Suicidal tendencies are increasing because of a lack of proper knowledge about how life works.
